Preserving Mithila Heritage, Building Community in Australia

The Mithila Cultural Society Australia (MCSA) is a registered not-for-profit community organization established to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich linguistic, artistic, and cultural heritage of the Mithila region.

Founded by a group of passionate Maithil families across Australia, our society serves as a home away from home. We are dedicated to fostering unity, cultural education, and social connection among the Maithil diaspora while introducing the wider Australian community to our vibrant traditions - from Madhubani art and folk music to our timeless festivals and cuisine.

Acharya Ramlochan Saran

A Meeting with a Living Legacy: Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Ravi Lochan Saran in Australia. Ravi Ji is the grandson of Acharya Ramlochan Saran and has established his own respected place within Australian society. Meeting him was not simply an introduction to an accomplished member of our community; it was an encounter with a living link to one of the great custodians of Maithili language and publishing. Our conversation inspired me to look more deeply at the remarkable legacy of his grandfather. At a time when access to books was limited and regional languages needed determined champions, Acharya Ramlochan Saran chose publishing as an instrument of education and cultural continuity. His work reminds us that safeguarding a language requires more than affection. It requires books, teachers, institutions, printers and families willing to carry the responsibility forward.

The meeting focused on sponsorships, cultural programmes, volunteer engagement, Mithila Haat, and community outreach, followed by a warm potluck lunch that strengthened friendships and reinforced our shared vision of "Mithila Away from Mithila." Together, we continue building a vibrant community while preserving our rich cultural heritage for future generations.

700 years old Marriage Mart of Mithila: Exploring the 2026 Saurath Sabha

The Saurath Sabha is a historic 700-year-old Maithil Brahmin marriage assembly in Bihar, which began its 2026 edition on July 5th. This year’s gathering honors deep-rooted traditions, such as the use of Panjikars (genealogists) to verify family lineages, while simultaneously embracing modern adaptations like digital certification to accommodate families living across the globe. By blending ancient heritage with contemporary technology, the Sabha continues to serve as a vital cultural touchstone for the Mithila community.
